Upper Mustang, often referred to as the ‘Last Forbidden Kingdom,’ is a hidden gem located in the northern part of Nepal, beyond the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. The trek to this region offers a unique opportunity to experience the unspoiled Tibetan culture, centuries-old monasteries, and otherworldly landscapes that resemble the moon’s surface.
The Trek:
The Upper Mustang Trek provides an unparalleled journey through arid desert landscapes, deep canyons, and red rock formations, all set against the backdrop of snow-capped peaks. Ancient Tibetan Buddhist shrines, chortens, and mysterious cave hermitages dot the trail.
Upon landing at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, you'll be warmly greeted and transferred to your hotel. The vibrant atmosphere of Thamel welcomes you. In the evening, you'll attend a briefing about the upcoming trek, preparing you for the journey ahead.
You'll embark on a scenic 6-7 hour drive to Pokhara, witnessing the changing landscapes from terraced farms to hilly terrains. Alternatively, a quick 25-minute flight offers an aerial view of the magnificent Himalayan range. Once in Pokhara, the serene Phewa Lake awaits. Spend your evening strolling along the lakeside, with the Annapurna range reflecting in the calm waters.
An early morning flight takes you to Jomsom, the district headquarters of Mustang. The strong winds and the barren landscapes are a stark contrast to the lush Pokhara valley. Your trek commences here, leading you to Kagbeni, the gateway to Upper Mustang, situated at the confluence of two rivers.
Trek along the east bank of the Kali Gandaki river, climbing over numerous ridges as you head to the village of Tangbe. The journey continues through barley, wheat, and apple orchards until you reach the village of Chele.
You'll ascend to Taklam La Pass, surrounded by grand views of Tilicho Peak and Damodar Danda. Descending past small villages, you'll reach the settlement of Syanbochen.
Crossing two passes, Yamda La and Nyi La, the trail takes you through Tibetan-style villages with chortens and a panorama of the Himalayas. The trek then descends to Ghaymi.
You'll traverse a desolate landscape, crossing a steel bridge over the Tangmar Chu river, and ascend to a plateau to reach the village of Tsarang, housing a maze of fields, willow trees, and a massive five-story monastery.
The trail first descends to the Tsarang Chu canyon and then climbs steeply after crossing the river, offering the first view of the walled city of Lo Manthang. As you enter this ancient capital, narrow alleys and the Tibetan Buddhist culture welcome you.
Spend the day exploring the riches of Lo Manthang. Visit the Royal Palace, monasteries, and mingle with the locals to understand their unique culture and traditions.
Retrace your steps back through Tsarang, Ghaymi, and Syanbochen, taking a different route via Gyakar instead of Chele, offering new sceneries. Eventually, you'll reach Kagbeni and then Jomsom.
Board a flight back to Pokhara. The rest of the day is free for relaxation or exploring the city's attractions.
Drive or fly back to Kathmandu. Spend the evening shopping for souvenirs or exploring the city's cultural landmarks.
